Why Clients Running SEO and PPC Together Out-Earn Either Channel Alone
An analysis of active Firestarter clients shows what happens to lead volume when organic and paid search run side by side, instead of on their own.
What This Data Shows
SEO builds visibility that compounds over months. PPC puts a business in front of buyers the same day a campaign launches. Run separately, each channel does its job. Run together, they don’t just add up — they multiply.
We pulled lead data across active client accounts — some running SEO only, some running PPC only, and some running both — to see what actually happens to total lead volume when the two channels share the same account. The pattern held across nearly every industry in our client base: home services, legal, medical, e-commerce, and more. Clients running both channels generated dramatically more leads than either channel produced on its own.
What We Looked At
We measured three things across each client account over a three-month window:
- Total LeadsEvery tracked phone call and form submission across Google Analytics and CallRail, the same measurement standard applied to every account regardless of service mix.
- Service MixWhether the account runs SEO only, PPC only, or both channels together, pulled directly from each client’s active service agreement.
- Measurement WindowA consistent three-month period (May – July 2026), so every client is compared over the same stretch of time.
The goal was simple: find out whether combining channels actually produces more leads, or whether it just feels that way. We wanted a number, not an impression. If you are weighing the split, our guide covers how much to put into each channel.
What We Found
Clients running SEO and PPC together out-produced single-channel clients on typical monthly lead volume. We report the median (the typical client’s result) rather than the average, so the numbers aren’t skewed by a handful of unusually large accounts.
| Service Mix | Median Leads / Mo. | Performance |
|---|---|---|
| PPC Only | 12.3 | Foundational |
| SEO Only | 26.7 | Effective |
| SEO + PPC | 98.7 | Most Effective |
The typical client running SEO + PPC together sees monthly leads climb to 98.7 — 3.7x higher than the typical SEO-only client, and 8x higher than the typical PPC-only client.
The clients generating the most leads in our dataset share one thing in common: they show up in both the organic results and the paid results for the same searches. That’s not a coincidence. It’s two channels compounding the same demand instead of splitting it.
What Combining Channels Actually Does
Running SEO and PPC together isn’t just “more marketing.” Each channel covers a gap the other one can’t close on its own.
PPC fills the gap while SEO builds
Organic rankings take months to climb. PPC starts generating leads the day a campaign launches, capturing demand that SEO hasn’t reached yet.
Two placements beat one
Showing up in both the organic listings and the paid results for the same search gives a business more of the page — and more of the searcher’s attention.
Most combined clients reach high-volume territory
73% of clients running both channels generate 50+ leads a month. Only 25% of SEO-only clients reach that same level.
The pattern holds across industries
Home services, legal, medical, and e-commerce clients all showed the same lift when PPC was added alongside an existing SEO program.
- More total pipeline: Combining channels catches leads that neither one reaches on its own.
- Protection against a single point of failure: If one channel dips — an algorithm update, a platform change — the other keeps leads coming in.
- Faster time to results: PPC leads start flowing immediately while SEO’s compounding value builds in the background.
- Sharper targeting over time: Paid search data shows exactly which terms convert, which sharpens the keywords and content SEO targets next.
The Visual Story
The gap isn’t a handful of outliers pulling up an average. A clear majority of combined-channel clients cross into high-volume territory that single-channel clients rarely reach.

The Bottom Line
The data is consistent: clients who run SEO and PPC together generate more leads, more consistently, than clients running either channel by itself. SEO is the foundation — it builds the visibility that holds up over time. But PPC is what turns that foundation into leads immediately, while the organic side is still climbing.
You don’t need to run PPC forever to see the lift. Even a modest paid campaign layered onto an existing SEO account changes the shape of a client’s pipeline — more leads, arriving sooner, without waiting for organic growth to fully take hold.
The businesses generating the most leads in our client base today aren’t relying on one channel to do all the work. They’re the predictable result of two channels working the same demand from two directions. You can see it on a single account in our case studies on an insulation contractor that booked out eight weeks and a painting company running SEO and Google Ads together.
How We Run SEO and PPC Together
At Firestarter, combining channels isn’t two separate teams working in parallel. It’s one strategy split across two engines.
Service Audit & Goal Alignment
We start by identifying where SEO is already winning, where it isn’t yet, and which gaps PPC can close immediately.
Parallel Campaign Launch
SEO foundation work and PPC campaigns launch together, so paid traffic starts generating leads while organic rankings build.
Shared Keyword & Landing Page Strategy
Both channels target the same high-intent searches and route traffic to landing pages built to convert, so nothing is duplicated or working against itself.
Ongoing Cross-Channel Reporting
One report, both channels — so it’s always clear where leads are coming from and where the next dollar of spend should go.
