Consider this; you spend lots of time, money, and effort in developing the perfect website for your business. It has all the bells and whistles and you feel like this is the moment that’s going to bring your company into the future. You launch your website and remain optimistic. Only after some time do you realize that you’re not getting anywhere near the traffic and site visits you expected.  So, what’s the point? The point is that you can have the best website in the world but if no one can find it, what good is the website? Enter search engine optimization.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is the process of increasing and ultimately maximizing the number of visitors to a specific website by increasing its ranking in Google. Bringing more traffic to a website will increase company/product visibility and sales. In the midst of a global pandemic, when the vast majority of companies have seen a dramatic shift towards online business, SEO is especially important. Companies such as Firestarter SEO have been instrumental in helping their clients maintain their businesses in an online setting by helping them attract the attention they require.

How does Search Engine Optimization work?

There are a number of different ways to optimize a website. The most important of which is by working with keywords. Keywords are the lifeblood of any decent website and are a key reason sites will get listed in search engines such as Google. If you’re wondering what we mean by keywords, consider this: If you live in Denver and are looking for a place to have a hamburger, would you simply get on Google and type the word “hamburger?” Probably not. As most of us know, the results would be very vague and would probably give you recipes to make hamburgers, a Wikipedia page about it, etc. Instead, it would make more sense to search something like “hamburgers Denver.” This way, you’ll receive links to websites that are relevant to this sort of search. See, companies know that this is likely the main way people are searching for businesses and products nowadays. Therefore, on their website they’ll be sure to include relevant keywords such as  “best hamburger Denver,” or “Denver burgers,” etc. into their titles and content. In doing so, their site will consistently show up higher in search engine rankings, thus optimizing their website.

Another important way businesses will optimize their sites is via link building. Link building (aka off-site optimization) is important to SEO in that doing so increases trust with search engines such as Google. Having links to high quality, better known sites and vice versa, essentially tells Google that this site is one that stands out amongst the others and therefore deserves to be ranked higher. By having more links on your website, and at the same time having your website linked to others, it allows Google to explore and index more of your website, thus giving you more importance, and ultimately a higher ranking.

Why should businesses start optimizing their pages during a pandemic?

Now is the ideal time for businesses to optimize their websites. The Coronavirus Pandemic has severely disrupted how we do business. The current state of our economy is all we have to look at to understand this. Firestarter SEO believes that now is the best time to begin optimizing your website, especially if you are a small business that is able to sell its products online regardless of whether you were already doing so or not. During this turbulent time, online traffic has skyrocketed while business has dramatically declined for traditional, brick and mortar businesses.  As of now, we have no idea what the business world will look like after the Pandemic comes to an end. For example, it can be argued that many companies are finding themselves to be just as productive with their employees working from home as they were in the office. So why should they continue paying for large offices? Many people wonder if the commercial real estate industry will fully recover from the pandemic. The same question should be asked about whether or not this turn towards E-commerce will continue. And if it does continue, most businesses would prefer to have the maximum amount of traffic on their site possible.
